Langhe Wines, Piero Gatti: Quality Begins with Winter Pruning

Here in the Langhe, when winter shrouds the hills in a blanket of fog and nature seems to rest, the work in our vineyards, to produce perfect Langhe wines, never stops. Indeed, it enters a crucial phase: winter pruning. For us at the Piero Gatti Farm, this is more than just agricultural work, but a true ritual, a gesture of love towards our vineyards and an investment in the quality of our Langhe wines.

Pruning: An Ancient Dialogue Between Man and Vine

Winter pruning, which we perform between leaf fall and the resumption of growth (generally from December to March, sometimes even until April in colder areas), is an art passed down from generation to generation in our family. It’s not just a simple pruning of branches, but a targeted intervention that requires in-depth knowledge of the vine and our terroir.

Our winemakers, with expert eyes and confident gestures, observe each individual plant, deciding which shoots to keep and which to eliminate. It’s a true dialogue between man and vine, an act of care that prepares the plant for the new season.

Why do we prune our vines in winter?

Winter pruning is essential for several reasons, all linked to the quality of our wines.

We control production to enhance quality: through pruning, we regulate the quantity of grapes each vine will produce. For us, it’s essential to prioritize quality over quantity. Controlled production allows us to obtain more concentrated grapes, rich in aromas and flavors, which translates into Langhe wines of greater complexity and finesse.

We maintain the balance of our plants: pruning helps balance vegetative growth and fruit production, ensuring the health and longevity of our vines. We want our plants to be strong and resilient, capable of fully expressing the Langhe terroir.

We manage the space to optimize exposure: Pruning defines the shape of our vines and their placement in the vineyard, optimizing sun exposure and air circulation. This is essential for grape ripening and disease prevention.

We prepare the future of our wines: With pruning, we don’t just think about the next harvest, but also about future ones. We select the shoots that will bear fruit in the years to come, ensuring the continuity of our production and the consistent quality of our wines.

How We Work in Our Vineyards: Techniques and Tradition

In our vineyards, where we passionately cultivate Moscato and Brachetto, as well as wines made from blends of different varieties, we employ pruning techniques that enhance the unique characteristics of each grape variety. Among the techniques most commonly used by our winemakers are:

Guyot : This system, which includes a “fruiting” shoot and a “spur”, allows us to control production and obtain high-quality grapes, ideal for our more structured wines.

Spurred cordon : This system, which adapts well to our land, allows us to better manage the vegetation and obtain homogeneous production.

Every step of our winemakers is guided by tradition and knowledge of the land, with the goal of obtaining excellent grapes that are transformed into wines bearing the Piero Gatti name.

The Langhe Terroir and Our Passion: Essential Ingredients of Our Wines

Our work in the vineyard, and particularly winter pruning, is deeply rooted in the Langhe terroir. These hills, with their unique microclimate and soils suited to viticulture, are the cradle of our wines.

Every year, through pruning, we strive to best interpret the characteristics of this terroir, guiding our vines to express their full potential. But terroir isn’t the only ingredient in our wines. Our passion, love for the land, and respect for tradition, which has been passed down from generation to generation in our family, also contribute.

It is this passion that drives us to take care of every detail, from pruning to winemaking, to offer our customers authentic, high-quality wines, a sincere expression of the Langhe region and the work of the Piero Gatti Farm.

Choosing our wines means choosing a piece of our history, a sip of passion and tradition.
